What are some great and hardy perennial bushes I can plant?

My husband and I just purchased a house with several huge flower beds, and I was wanting to fill in space with plants that will grow back every year. What are some wonderful perennial bushes that I can plant? The lady before us hired a landscape artist and he planted these horrible looking things that I think are ugly but he did plant some hostas and such too.

it really is according to where you live. if you live in a winter that gets around -10 and no lower than -20 FAHRENHEIT

      then here are a few

      Musa basjoo-
world most cold hardy banana. very tropical looking. grows massive in good care. dies to the ground around october and comes up when temps are in the 70s and 80s every day

      Clematis-
this tropical looking vine will brighten up any backyard. the flowers can look very unusual if you have that veriety.

if you live where temps go at or no lower than 0 farenhiet

then here are a few more

all the ones on the top

      ground morning glory-
this is a hardy veriety of a tropical vine and annual called the morning glory. it blooms in the morning and has blue flowers

      pink moon vine-
      cold tollerant.
relative to the morning glory only this one blooms at night

It would help [everyone] to know what latitude you live in, for climate….

I’d wait a while and see what comes up. If the previous owner hired a landscape artist she probably also bought some good quality perennial plants that are attractive throughout the year. Don’t dig anything up yet – you might be losing something really good.

First I would need to know your zone, in order to make any real great suggestions. In my area, Phoenix AZ, zone 5, we have oleander, hibiscus, lavender, texas sage, and quite a few others.

Yes, we really need to know your growing zone and what the ugly plants are so we don’t suggest them. Also as Susie said you really need to wait to see what other plants come up, you may really be surprised by what’s there. Using a landscape artist can help with finding plants that are hardy to your area as well as needing very little care.

A catmint makes a wonderful choice for Perennial Plant. Catmint is extremely hardy, drought tolerant and virtually maintenance free. All this and nepeta repeat blooms sporadically throughout the summer.

I guess I am a little confused are you wanting perennials or are you looking for bushes two very different things. To my knowledge all shrubs and bushes come back every year unless they are planted in the wrong zone now on the other hand perennials come in many shapes and sizes and can be as large as some bushes. So again zone is important and then since you have hostas is it in a lot of shade or do the flower beds have some sun and shade. Perennials that come to mind as being large are Russian sage/sun drought tolerant a large perennial that attracts bees and butterflies the one I have right now is probably 3×4 one of my favorites and monardia blooms in red pink shades of purple and white attracts bees, moths, butterflies and humming birds another favorite now shrubs my two favorites are potentella and spirea both wonderful bloomers throughout the summer and different colors if you need some more idea go to wayside gardens or park seed on line great pictures and good ideas.
